Cheryl Smiling with Resident

We all crave a sense of community; it makes us feel comfortable, safe, and included. Cultivating a community atmosphere is what allows for growth and wellness to take place. McClellan Senior Living is a family-oriented senior living community in Anniston, Alabama, that genuinely cares about our residents, staff, families, guests, and anyone that calls Anniston home.

Through nurturing and supporting the community, both within the McClellan Senior Living campus and throughout the larger Anniston area, we provide an atmosphere that promotes health, wellness, and connectivity.

Cheryl-Martin-HeadshotCheryl Martin, Community Development Director at McClellan Senior Living, shared:

“…You have to understand that my love for seniors is genuine. I was partially raised by my great grandmother; she was the most influential person in my life growing up.

I stumbled upon McClellan Senior Living looking for a place for my mother to be around and involved more with other senior citizens. I started at McClellan as the Business Office Manager… now I am the Community Development Director. To be honest, it doesn’t matter where or what I’m doing at the facility; the residents are at the heart of my job and my drive always! I absolutely adore our residents, and no matter what kind of day I am having, they brighten my day, every day.

I feel my role is vital to the residents because I am out in the community, telling any and everyone who will listen how wonderful our residents are and how they would also benefit from being at our facility. We are small enough to give each resident individual care and a loving relationship. That is the message I spread to the outside [Anniston] community because that is the truth, and that is the message that is in my heart.”

What “Community” Means at McClellan

At McClellan Senior Living, the word “community” means more than caring for your neighbors. We become more than neighbors; we become family. Everyone in our community grows close and considers each other family, looking out for one another and genuinely taking an interest in each other’s lives.

We Cultivate a Family Environment

Within the McClellan Senior Living campus, we have created a family environment. We socialize, play games together, and know and care about each other.

Our sense of community, however, disperses out into the Anniston, Alabama, area. Both residents and team members have a strong desire to give back to the community.

“We want to be a part of the community, so we gather items for veterans, foster children, [and] needy families. We visit children at daycares; we also love to go out to eat together at local restaurants, shop at local stores, and we love being out in the community, especially because we live in such a beautiful area with a small town, family vibe,” says Cheryl.

Supporting Community is in Our Blood

Many of the caregivers and team members at McClellan Senior Living were born and raised in Alabama or the surrounding states. Cheryl explains, “there really hasn’t been a goal of supporting community or family; it is just something we are raised to do!” Cultivating and nurturing our sense of community and a family-like atmosphere comes naturally. This idea is a part of who we are as individuals as well as a team.

Supporting each other and our sense of community is something that is not only important to us, but it also differentiates us from other all-inclusive senior living communities. Our family-like atmosphere creates an environment and community for individuals to feel welcome and at home.

How We Support the McClellan Senior Living Community

While others may say they are a family, we show it. A few examples of how our caregivers and team members care for and support our McClellan family include:

  • A team member purchasing a television for a resident in need
  • Team members working double shifts during power outages to help residents feel at ease
  • A team member staying out until late on a winter night when a resident’s car broke down on the side of the road, refusing to leave until their vehicle was towed and they got home safely

Caregivers and team members at McClellan Senior Living go above and beyond what is required of them because it is the right thing to do. We support not only the residents of our community but also other team members. There is not one individual who has not helped out in another area when the need has arisen.

“The [woman] who does laundry has pitched in to serve in the dining room when short-staffed. The housekeeping [staff] has pitched in and worked in the dining room when events require extra dining room staff.” – Cheryl Martin, Community Development Director
